The Islamic talisman “Roqa’a al-Jib” is a spiritual item associated with Imam Reza (peace be upon him), the eighth Imam in Twelver Shia Islam. This talisman is written on a piece of natural paper by a Muslim, using water from the holy soil of Imam Hussain’s shrine and saffron essence. It holds significance as a symbol of protection, blessings, and connection to the spiritual realm.

The process of creating the talisman involves writing specific supplications, verses from the Quran, and other sacred texts on the piece of natural paper. The use of water from the soil of Imam Hussain’s shrine and saffron essence adds a spiritual dimension to the talisman, symbolizing a connection to the holy sites and the blessed Ahl al-Bayt (the family of the Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him).

“Roqa’a al-Jib” is a protective amulet attributed to Imam Reza (peace be upon him). It is narrated by Yasar, a servant of Ma’mun, that once Imam Reza (peace be upon him) entered the palace of Hamid ibn Qahtabah. He took off his clothes and handed them to Hamid, who then gave them to his servant girl for washing. After a while, the servant girl returned with a piece of cloth (Raqea) and gave it to Hamid, saying that she found it in the collar of Imam Reza’s shirt. Hamid asked the Imam about the cloth, and Imam Reza (peace be upon him) replied that it was a talisman (ta’wiz) which he would not separate from. Hamid asked if they could be honored with its use, and the Imam explained that the talisman, when kept close, protects from misfortunes and safeguards from the accursed Satan. He then recited the talisman for Hamid.

This story highlights the significance of the “Roqa’a al-Jib” as a protective amulet that is believed to provide spiritual blessings and safeguard the wearer from harm and the influence of negative forces. It’s considered a form of supplication and connection to the blessings of Imam Reza (peace be upon him) and the Ahl al-Bayt.

The Roqa’a al-Jib talisman is thought to bring various spiritual and material benefits to those who possess it. It is believed to offer protection from harm, promote healing, grant blessings, and serve as a source of comfort and solace. Many believers consider it a way to seek intercession and blessings from the Ahl al-Bayt.

 رقعة الجیب او حرز  للامام الرضا علیه السلام

بِسْمِ اللّٰهِ الرَّحْمٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ، بِسْمِ اللّٰهِ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِالرَّحْمٰنِ مِنْكَ إِنْ كُنْتَ تَقِيّاً، أَوْ غَيْرَ تَقِيٍّ، أَخَذْتُ بِاللّٰهِ السَّمِيعِ الْبَصِيرِ عَلَىٰ سَمْعِكَ وَبَصَرِكَ، لَاسُلْطانَ لَكَ عَلَيَّ وَلَا عَلَىٰ سَمْعِي، وَلَا عَلَىٰ بَصَرِي، وَلَا عَلَىٰ شَعْرِي، وَلَا عَلَىٰ بَشَرِي، وَلَا عَلَىٰ لَحْمِي، وَلَا عَلَىٰ دَمِي، وَلَا عَلَىٰ مُخِّي، وَلَا عَلَىٰ عَصَبِي، وَلَا عَلَىٰ عِظامِي، وَلَا عَلَىٰ مالِي، وَلَا عَلَىٰ مَا رَزَقَنِي رَبِّي، سَتَرْتُ بَيْنِي وَ بَيْنَكَ بِسِتْرِ النُّبُوَّةِ الَّذِي اسْتَتَرَ أَنْبِياءُ اللّٰهِ بِهِ مِنْ سَطَواتِ الْجَبابِرَةِ وَالْفَراعِنَةِ، جَبْرَئِيلُ عَنْ يَمِينِي، وَمِيكائِيلُ عَنْ يَسارِي، وَ إِسْرافِيلُ عَنْ وَرائِي، وَمُحَمَّدٌ صَلَّى اللّٰهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ أَمامِي، وَاللّٰهُ مُطَّلِعٌ عَلَيَّ، يَمْنَعُكَ مِنِّي وَيَمْنَعُ الشَّيْطانَ مِنِّي . اللّٰهُمَّ لَا يَغْلِبُ جَهْلُهُ أَناتَكَ أَنْ يَسْتَفِزَّنِي وَيَسْتَخِفَّنِي . اللّٰهُمَّ إِلَيْكَ الْتَجَأْتُ، اللّٰهُمَّ إِلَيْكَ الْتَجَأْتُ، اللّٰهُمَّ إِلَيْكَ الْتَجَأْتُ.

There is a fascinating story associated with this talisman, narrated by Abu al-Salt Harawi: One day, Imam Ali ibn Musa al-Ridha (peace be upon him) was sitting in his house when Ma’mun sent for him. The Imam got up and said to me, “Ma’mun does not seek me at this time unless it’s for something difficult, and, by God, he cannot harm me because of these words that have reached me from my grandfather, the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his family).” Abu al-Salt continues, “I accompanied the Imam to Ma’mun’s presence. When the Imam’s gaze fell on Ma’mun, he began reciting this talisman silently. As the Imam stood facing Ma’mun, Ma’mun looked towards the Imam and said, ‘O Abu al-Hasan (a title of respect for Imam al-Ridha), I have ordered one hundred thousand dinars to be given to you, and write down whatever you need.’ When the Imam returned, Ma’mun looked at the corner where the Imam had stood and said, ‘I intended, and God intended, and whatever God intends is better.’”

It showcases the Imam’s belief in the power of supplication, trust in God’s protection, and the connection to the divine through the use of such talismans. The Imam’s recitation of the talisman before meeting Ma’mun suggests a belief in its ability to provide spiritual strength and influence outcomes, even in the face of challenging situations.
